With Rue's mother Jane, we visited friends Nick and Virginia again in May
at their lovely house in Indre et Loire. We'd promised to build them a pond,
and wondered if we'd taken on rather too much when we saw the size of the rough
hole the digger had left! In extremely hot weather, we dug and levelled, lined,
filled, walled, arranged rocks and planted, and after two weeks had created a
masterpiece, complete with intermittent cascade (weather dependent), viewing platform,
and resident dragonflies. We even had time to see a few birds and orchids in the
fantastic Brenne marshes nearby and do some cattle tourism (including Heck cattle,
the “reconstituted” aurochs).
