Tall Ships Parade of Sail, Southampton 2002: Palinuro

Sailing

The main excitement of our annual thrash Round the Island was losing our jib halyard as we crossed the starting line (my fault -- Ed.). We sailed on (nervously, with a rather baggy jib on the spinny halyard) and it wasn't until running down the back of the Wight that we were able to winch a "volunteer" up the mast to retrieve the halyard (thanks Robin)--while still sailing, of course. Eat your heart out, Ellen MacArthur! We did very well until the last leg, then sank back to about a third of the way down the field while beating against the tide past the hazardous Ryde Sands.
