When Richard was at school he did a French "exchange" with a lad
called Didier Lapetoule, who became a good friend. This summer,
Richard's mum arranged a visit to Didier's parents' house in
Britanny. Richard and Didier hadn't seen each other for over 26
years--and had forgotten most of one another's language. However,
within half an hour the years had vanished, and we spent a brilliant
few days exploring Britanny, made wonderfully welcome by Didier
and his family--and being fed the most sumptuous seafood twice
daily ("Jost wahn waffer theen crab claw..."). We joined the locals
gathering oysters, cockles and mussels at low tide and brought them
home for our own seafood feast. The hens enjoyed the shells so as
ever nothing was wasted.
